We have been so impressed by the generosity – and sheer creative ingenuity – shown by local businesses this winter as, despite the significant challenges many face themselves, they’ve come together to support vulnerable people around them.
The Virtual Christmas Raffle organised by local business owners Patricia Howe and Hanna Merrett following the cancellation of Exeter’s ‘physical’ Christmas market, is a prime example of such ingenuity. Patricia (founder of PHEW – Physical Health, Emotional Wellbeing) and Hanna (who recently launched Kip McGrath Exeter East education centre) sold raffle tickets online, and drew the winners in a filmed draw on Friday 1st January.
A wonderful range of prizes were generously donated by local businesses for the draw, including an Organic Life Pamper hamper, English & Maths tutoring sessions, vouchers for the ‘On The Waterfront’, haircuts and luxury Chococos chocolates. Following the draw, they faced an additional challenge of distributing prizes to winners before the rapidly approaching lockdown deadline!
We’d like to say a HUGE thank you to Patricia, Hanna and all the generous local businesses who supported the virtual event, helping to raise an impressive £633 for St Petrock’s Christmas Appeal. These much-needed funds are helping St Petrock’s provide vital survival services (including Rough Sleeper daily outreach, hot food, showers & clothing) and specialist support (housing assessment & referral, benefits & healthcare access) to some of the most vulnerable people in our city this winter.
Many thanks Exeter for all your wonderful support – in these challenging times, it’s great to see people looking out for others as a community.
